Gum Disease Treatment Cost

Piggy bank for gum disease treatment cost

Gum disease is a serious condition that affects millions of Americans and a staggering number of people worldwide. It typically starts mildly and is difficult to notice in the beginning. Over time, however, it can result in bad breath, gum recession, and eventually tooth loss.

If you have gum disease, we recommend that you seek out treatment as early as possible in order to limit potential damage. You may be wondering, how much does gum disease treatment cost? We will answer that question in this article and provide some context as to the factors that may increase or decrease the cost to you.

Gum Disease Treatment Cost

Gum disease treatment plans vary depending on the individual and the severity of their gum disease. In general, however, treatment typically involves root planing, laser treatment, or traditional gum surgery. In each case, these treatments are often followed up by periodontal maintenance and a separate gum repair treatment if necessary.

The following is a list of treatments and their average cost. Please keep in mind that costs can vary substantially based on factors discussed later. Additionally, your dental insurance provider may cover some or all of the cost of your treatment.

Root planing: Root planing typically costs $150 - $450 per quadrant. Oftentimes, a patient will only need root planing in a small area rather than the whole mouth.

Traditional gum surgery / laser gum treatment: Traditional gum surgery and LANAP laser treatment costs $1250 - $3000 per quadrant on average.

Periodontal maintenance: Periodontal maintenance, also called periodontal cleanings, typically costs $100 - $350 per session.

Other gum repair treatments: Many other gum repair treatments are available, most of which are designed to correct gum disease-related damage. Please see our services page for an explanation of each type of treatment.

Factors that affect gum disease treatment cost

The following factors may affect gum disease treatment costs:

Severity of the gum disease: Advanced periodontal disease requires extensive treatment to correct. The cost of treatment may be more expensive as a result. That being said, dental insurance often covers a large amount of this expense.

Preferred treatment: There is sometimes more than one way to address a gum problem. In these instances, the patient may desire one type of treatment over another. For example, some patients prefer traditional periodontal surgery, while others favor LANAP laser gum treatment.

Dental insurance: As mentioned above, dental insurance often covers a substantial portion of gum disease treatment costs.

Periodontist and office location: More experienced periodontists or periodontists with specialized skills often charge higher rates. In addition, periodontal offices in expensive urban centers tend to charge more than their suburban and rural counterparts.
